Data Protection, Personal Information and Security

Protecting your personal information during your job hunt. There are many online options to look at when job hunting, and all of them involve posting some of your personal data online. Here are a few simple things to think about to help safeguard your data.

What to Check Before Entering Your Details

1Check the site is secure — if a site asks you to complete a form, upload documents, or enter personal info, make sure the URL begins with HTTPS:// and shows a lock symbol. We pay to ensure our own site is secure, so your data is safe here.
2Ask why a site isn't secure — if a site isn't secure, ask yourself why, and who owns it, if they're asking you to input personal data without a secure connection. We'd recommend avoiding any site that isn't secure — though of course that's your choice.
3Check you can delete your CV — if a site lets you upload a CV, make sure there's an option to delete it later if you want to.
4Check for data protection registration — anyone who collects personal data from you should be data protection registered. If there's no mention of this on the site, we'd recommend avoiding it.
5Look for a privacy policy and terms of use — in the UK and Europe, laws require websites to publish a policy covering privacy, data protection and terms of use. If a site has none of these, avoid it.
