Food Safety Food Hygiene Certification on Super Yachts

Food Hygiene Requirements

Chefs working on all UK-flagged vessels must have a food hygiene/food safety course accredited by the MCA. Some non-UK-flagged yachts follow this same rule, and some don't.

1In-person courses are generally required — online-only courses are not typically accepted, as the MCA wants chefs to prove they sat the exam in person, with a verifiable point of contact between the candidate and the test centre.
2Check the MCA's recognised qualifications list — the MCA's recognised food hygiene/food safety in catering qualifications list sets out which qualifications and awarding bodies fulfil the learning outcomes and assessment criteria in Annexe 1 of Merchant Shipping Notice MSN 1846M.
3Aim for Level 3 — we recommend all chefs working on superyachts sit an approved Level 3 food hygiene course. No matter the size of yacht you work on, you're a department head in charge of the galley's operations, food hygiene and stores.
4Non-UK flagged vessels — email the relevant flag state's body to ask which course they accept.
Important: check the qualification number matches the ones on the MCA's recognised list when booking a course!
