Super Yacht Provisioning, Buying Supplies and Stock Control
Each yacht and each captain will have their preferred way of provisioning onboard. Make sure at an interview you ask as many questions as you can about how provisioning is done, any budgetary constraints, and how much time is spent at anchor or remote.
Some captains already have a list of provisioners they use, and you might have your own favourites — so discuss this before joining a yacht to avoid any disappointment or issues.
How to Prepare Before an Interview
1Research local suppliers — if you're new to yachting, create a document and research where to buy provisions in the port you're applying to. For a job in Antibes, for example, know where to buy fish, meat, dry goods, veg, organic/bio, Asian and other speciality products.
2Know the area before your interview — if you've scoped a location like Antibes and know where the key shops are, you'll be ready when a captain asks what you know about provisioning there, even if you're new to yachting.
3List the top provisioning companies — note the top 5 or so companies who supply provisions to that area. We have a list of provisioners on this site — feel free to use it to get ready for your interview.
4Understand the systems in place — larger yachts should have preferred supplier lists and systems in place, and some provisioners now offer stock ordering and control systems online, integrated with the onboard accounts system. Smaller yachts will expect you to shop in person, so research suppliers local to the ports you'll be based in or visiting that season.
Our advice: be prepared and get your research done in advance. It might be the deciding factor when a captain compares you to other chefs — showing you're organised and professional.
